The Best Time of the Year to Move

It is no secret that moving your family to a new location is a challenging task. You have to be both physically and mentally prepared for a huge change. To help ease the burden, you should make all the necessary preparations to ensure that your relocation will go off without a hitch.

If you are lucky enough to have a flexible schedule and you’re not pressed to move out on a specific date, you have the freedom to choose when to relocate to your new home. But the question is, when exactly is the best time to move?

When to Move

If you could choose any time of the year to move, experts recommend spring or late fall. During these times, it is much easier to find and hire movers. What’s more, you can save a significant amount of money because it is the off-season and moving companies are not charging the highest rates.

If you live or are moving to an area affected by seasonal weather (snow storms in the northeast or hurricanes in the south for instance), keep in mind how weather could delay or cause problems for your move. You don’t want to load up all your belongings and then arrive at your new house but not be able to get the moving truck up the driveway because it’s covered in snow!

Also, keep in mind that weekend rates are usually the highest, both for truck rental and moving companies. As such, it would be wise to avoid moving on a weekend. Also, if you don’t want to pay huge fees, you should reconsider your decision to move on the first day of the month or during summer, when it’s the peak season for moving.

Important Factors to Consider

Since most of us have other considerations, such as our children, spouses, and jobs, there are a few factors you should take into account when choosing the date for moving. For instance, if you have children of schooling age, it’s best to consider the school calendar and schedule the move around it.

Summer is ideal for moving with kids since the children are out of school. This will give them plenty of time to get their belongings in order, say goodbye to their friends, and help with the packing. Also, moving out at the end of school will give the kids enough time to get settled in and prepare for their new school. As you may know, too many changes in their lives can significantly affect their school performance and their emotional well-being. But many other families are in the same situation, so the summer remains the most popular time to move, which means early planning is essential!

Take note that it isn’t a good idea to move during a major holiday such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Day. Finding a moving company to assist you during this time of the year can be difficult since many of them also take some time off to spend the holidays with their families. If you do find someone, expect to spend a significant amount of money for the move.

As much as possible, give yourself enough time in your new home before the holiday season begins. This way, you’ll be able to meet new people and feel a sense of community with your new neighbors.
