What do you do with water-damaged furniture, carpet, and drywall?

If you have water-damaged furniture, carpet, or drywall, you usually cannot save it and you need to have it hauled away quickly so mold doesn’t spread. Tear out the ruined materials and hire a junk removal crew to haul away the debris so repairs can begin.

After a leak, a storm, or a flood, the clock starts on water damage. Soaked drywall, saturated carpet and padding, and waterlogged upholstered furniture and mattresses rarely recover. Left alone, they quickly attract mold. When this happens, you have both a serious home repair problem and a health problem. Getting the ruined materials out quickly is priority one.

You’ll need to first pull up carpet and padding. If furniture has soaked through, it needs to be removed. If the drywall is affected, then it needs to be cut away and hauled off. This is heavy and messy. It leaves behind a lot of debris.

A couple of important cautions to keep in mind: if water came from sewage or floodwater, treat the materials as contaminated. Take proper precautions. If you suspect the home has older materials that could contain asbestos, have them assessed before disturbing them.

Once the ruined materials are out, clearing the debris is where a junk removal crew helps most. The Junkluggers of Wilmington hauls away the water-damaged furniture, carpet, drywall, and debris in one visit. They can carry it all out for you. That means your restoration or repairs can start without a pile in the driveway. If anything happens to be salvageable, we will donate or recycle as appropriate.
