What should be cleared out of an office before the end of the year?
Updated: November 6, 2026
Before year-end, clear out broken or unused furniture, outdated electronics, excess supplies, and anything else the business no longer needs. Keep records and devices containing sensitive information separate so they can go through the appropriate destruction or recycling process.
Offices have a way of accumulating items slowly. Chairs often get replaced and the old ones go in storage, just in case. Monitors tend to stick around after technology upgrades. Filing cabinets remain even after files are digitized. Extra supplies get pushed into closets until nobody remembers how they got there. And year-end happens to be a good time to separate working assets from things that are just taking up expensive office space.
It helps to start with bulk furniture. Consider first desks, chairs, tables, shelving, cabinets, and storage units. If they’re broken or unused, decide if they should remain or if they can go.
Then consider electronics and equipment. Old monitors, printers, phones, cables, and other devices can take up a surprising amount of space. Computers, hard drives, copiers, and other devices that may contain company or customer data should be separated before the general cleanout. They may require secure destruction or specialized electronics recycling rather than ordinary disposal.
Paper records also need to be handled with care. Anything with confidential information needs to be destroyed once the business retention period has passed. Sensitive files can’t just go in with regular junk loads.
Once those exceptions are handled, a commercial junk removal crew can handle just about anything else that isn’t outright hazmat. The staff won’t have to move anything on their own and they can keep doing their normal jobs.
