What items can't a junk removal company haul away?

Standard junk removal does not include hazardous or regulated materials such as fuels, wet paint, solvents, pesticides, asbestos, or medical waste. Those items need the appropriate specialty or local disposal route.

Junk removal companies can take all kinds of household and business items. That doesn’t mean there are no limits, though. The main dividing line between standard junk removal and specialized service can be stated in one word: hazmat.

Hazardous materials have to be handled in a special way or it’s not safe. This is the case for things like gasoline, chemicals, solvents, pesticides, certain automotive fluids, wet paint, asbestos, and medical waste. They all require special handling. Pressurized containers also require special handling, while equipment containing fuel may need to be emptied before removal.

There are also some items that are not hazardous but have to be prepped before hauling them away. Appliances need to be disconnected from water, gas, or electricity before a removal crew can take them. Built-in equipment might need to be detached first.

Heavy debris is another category worth talking about in advance. Things like concrete and brick can be hauled away, but they weigh a lot. Trucks have weight limits. Dense materials may be limited to about one foot of truck depth and may also be subject to different pricing.

Beyond items like these, standard junk removal can take most items. That includes furniture, mattresses, major appliances (once disconnected), electronics, and exercise equipment. That’s a lot of items that would be a pain to manage on your own. When in doubt, it’s always wise to ask your junk removal provider first, just to be sure.
