What does a junk removal company do with the stuff they take?

After pickup, junk removal companies sort items into three streams. Usable furniture, appliances, and goods are donated to local charities, metal, electronics, and recyclable materials go to certified recycling facilities, and whatever cannot be donated or recycled goes to a licensed disposal site.

Given enough time, just about any home or office can accumulate a mountain of old stuff no longer needed. So a lot of people and companies hire junk removal services to take care of the items, partly out of convenience and partly out of necessity. But you may wonder: what next?

A lot of junk removal services take items straight to the landfill. But The Junkluggers of New Haven County, and other companies with similar business models, don’t do that. They sort the load based on the condition of the items.

Donation is done when that is possible. Furniture, appliances, and household goods that are still usable go to local charity partners, where they can help someone in the community instead of taking up landfill space. Items that are too good to toss but harder to place can also move through reuse programs (Remix Market, in the case of the Junkluggers).

Not every item is in good enough shape to donate, but that doesn’t mean a one-way ticket to the landfill. Raw materials like metal, plastic, fabric, and electronics are sent to certified recycling facilities instead—it beats burial.

With The Junkluggers of New Haven County, only what is left over after the other two options are exhausted is sent to the landfill. For the items able to be donated on your behalf, all applicable donation receipts will be provided. So when you hand off a load of old furniture or a cluttered garage, a good share of it goes on to a second life rather than a landfill.
