What will the city take for bulk trash pickup, and what do you do with the rest?

Most municipal bulk pickup takes a limited number of large household items on a scheduled day. This is generally not enough to clear out construction debris, appliances with refrigerant, or hazardous materials.

Bulk trash rules vary from town to town across Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, but the pattern is similar everywhere you look. Many municipal programs will collect a few large items, like a couch or a table, on a scheduled bulk pickup day. There is usually a cap on how many items can be picked up and sometimes you need to book well in advance. For single items, this can work well. But if you have a lot that needs to go, that’s a different issue.

Bulk programs often will not take construction or renovation debris. Similar restrictions apply to appliances with refrigerant like refrigerators and air conditioners. They cap the volume, too, so whole-room cleanouts are out of the question. The city also runs on its own schedule, not yours. And you also need to take the heavy item to the curb yourself. Again: municipal bulk pickup is a great public service, but it won’t do everything and you have to do a lot of work yourself still.
