How do you dispose of a mattress in Rhode Island?
July 9, 2026
Rhode Island residents can drop off used mattresses for free at participating local transfer stations through the Mattress Recycling Council's program, which operates in nearly every city and town in the state. If you cannot transport it yourself, a junk removal pickup is the simpler route.
Getting rid of a mattress is a pain, but Rhode Island has done a great job of making it easier. Mattress disposal is available through the Mattress Recycling Council under the Bye Bye Mattress brand. This program lets residents drop off used mattresses and box springs for free at participating transfer stations in nearly every community in the state. The mattresses are then broken down so the foam, fabric, steel, and wood inside can be recycled instead of trashed entirely.
The problem: transportation. Mattresses are heavy and unwieldy, and about the hardest thing in the world to fit in a car. It’s tough to handle one on your own, even a twin size one let alone a queen or king. If you cannot get the mattress to a drop-off site, much of the convenience of the program is lost on you.
Junk removal pickups can solve that problem for you. The Junkluggers of Southeastern MA & RI can carry your old mattress down from any floor, load it for you, and route it for recycling where possible so it stays out of the landfill. You won’t have to strap the mattress to the roof of your car with bungee cords en route to the transfer station.
When an upgrade or move leaves you with an old mattress of little use, junk removal is often the easiest way to make it disappear. If you would like help with that, you can always schedule your pickup online. The Junkluggers of Southeastern MA & RI serves Plymouth, Middleboro, Lakeville, Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton, Attleboro, and Providence.
