On the move this summer? ☀️ Call us to declutter before you leave or to clean out what's left behind.

What can I do with large items I no longer want?

If you’re about to start decluttering, you probably dread the idea of dealing with large items. Nothing can stall out a project quite like a treadmill collecting dust or an old washing machine sitting in the basement. You know these items need to go, but figuring out where they need to go and how to get them there is where a lot of people get stuck.

Donation is always best when it can be done. Local charities in the Fairfield and Westchester area will often take furniture, working appliances, and household goods. Though be aware: most have restrictions on what they will pick up and from which floor. If a piece is too heavy or too large for a charity’s pickup crew, you’ll need to make other arrangements. The same is true if your charity of choice has a waitlist.

Selling locally through Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist often works when items have a clear value, but large pieces tend to move more slowly online. After all, buyers have to arrange their own transportation, which limits the pool to people with access to trucks and the patience to haul something large like a sectional sofa on a Saturday morning.

For items that are broken, worn, or otherwise past the point of donation, recycling is an option depending on the material. Metal frames, certain wood components, and appliance parts can all be recovered at the right facility. The challenge is knowing which facility accepts what and getting the item there without a truck.

The Junkluggers of Fairfield & Westchester Counties handles all of these kinds of items in a single visit. The crew picks up large items from wherever they sit in your home, including basements, attics, and upper floors. Items in donatable condition are routed to local charity partners. Recyclable materials are separated and sent to the appropriate facilities. Everything else is disposed of responsibly. All applicable donation receipts will be provided for items donated on your behalf.
